| Thathri rocked by protests over alleged custodial killings | | SSP Doda orders suspension of Incharge PP Karade | | Jammu, April 25 Protests rock Thathri area of Doda district following the death of a local youth allegedly in police custody forcing the senior officers to order a magisterial probe in the matter here today. Meanwhile SSP Doda, Manohar Singh late evening suspended police Sub Inspector Irfan Wani, chowki officer of Karada police post According to reports, a youth identified as Reshi Kumar, son of Falil Singh of Kundi Charala, Thathri and his sister were allegedly picked up by the police for questioning in the murder case of their own brother along with some other persons. The brother of the victim, Madan Kumar was murdered three weeks back in his home village Kundi Charala in Thathri. Locals said that Reshi was arrested on Monday morning and was shifted to Thathri hospital after he was subjected to third degree torture. On seeing the deteriorating condition of the victim, he was shifted to district hospital Doda where from he was directly shifted to Jammu hospital without informing his relatives, said Rajesh, one of the relatives of the deceased. Reshi reportedly breathed his last in GMC Jammu, where he was admitted by the police. Though police said that the youth was admitted after he complaint of stomach pain and was diagnosed jaundice, locals alleged that he was tortured in the custody. As the news of the death spread in the area, large number of people came on streets and staged a protest demonstration at Thathri along Doda-Kishtwar road. Reports reaching here revealed that number of people from village Kundi Charala gathered at Thathri and staged a protest demonstration alleging that the youth was killed in custody by police, on Tuesday night. They also alleged that the sister of the victim was sexually assaulted in the custody. They said the girl was kept in custody when there was no female police deployed in the post. However, police has denied the allegations and said that the girl was not arrested. Rejecting the claim of police that the victim was suffering with Jaundice that led to his death, people said that if so, why did police arrest a critically ailing person? Shouting anti police and anti-government slogans the protestors blocked the Doda-Kishtwar road and demanded immediate arrest of incharge Police post Karara, Irfan Ahmad, who according to them arrested Reshi and tortured him to death. The protestors blocked the vehicular movement on the road and also pelted stones on the buses parked on the road. At least five vehicles suffered partial damage in the stone pelting. Confirming the death of youth, Deputy Inspector General of Police, L Indu Mohanty said that the youth was arrested in connection with murder case of his cousin few days ago. He said, “Reshi was reportedly suffering from jaundice and was shifted to GMC Jammu were he breathed his last”. “A magisterial enquiry has been ordered into the matter, and the postmortem report is awaited”, the DIG said adding, “We will investigate the allegations thoroughly. .Meanwhile Senior Superintendent of Police, Doda district Manohar Singh late evening suspended police sub inspector Irfan Wani, chowki officer of Karada police post in connection with alleged case of custodial death of Rishi Kumar of Dokai Charallan in Thatri area of Doda sources added.
