| BJP GAINING FOOT HOLD | | 'ENROLLMENT DRIVE SUCCESSFUL' | | Jammu, August 07 Slowly but surely the state unit of the Bharatiya Janta Party has been gaining ground by regularly organizing special enrollment drives aimed at increasing partys strength and mass base in the state. According to the BJP President, Dr Nirmal Singh " the recent enrollment drive carried out by the party turned out to be very encouraging and fruitful as party workers enrolled over 20,000 fresh members. Giving details of the total number of the active members of the BJP in the state,Singh said "there were already over one lakh active members of the BJP in the state and out of this 20,000 were from the Kashmir valley." He said that under the drive for enrolling more members 2,000 members were enrolled from the Kashmir valley giving them a glimmer of hope of gaining a foot hold in the Kashmir valley during the 2008 Assembly elections. Dr Nirmal Singh claimed that poor performance of the coalition government in the state has provided them with the opportunity to reach out to the masses and expose the inefficient working style of the state government. He said, majority of people in the state had got "disillusioned" with the functioning of the coalition Government adding that "we had no problem in accepting membership from people in the state." Asked whether the last year's split in the organisation following formation of Praja Parishad by Mr Chander Mohan Sharma, who functioned as vice president of the BJP, had weakened the BJP Dr Singh said "so far there has been no impact on our strength."He explained that "individuals do not matter in the BJP” He hoped that the new body, for which the elections at the district level and for the state level were scheduled to be held in October, would "infuse vigour in the BJP." Dr Singh, who is not entitled to contest for the party Chief's post said that after completing my tenure "I will continue to be a BJP soldier and devote more time towards party affairs." He said "our main task is to prod the centre and the state Governments for taking tough measures for eliminating the menace of militancy. "He said "we have already announced our cooperation in case the Government initiates measures for restoring peace." He lamented that instead of doing it the ruling coalition was evincing greater interest in increasing the salaries and perks of legislators and ministers. He has suggested to the state Government to resolve not only the problem of unemployment but underemployment which could be done by revising the monthly emoluments of Rehber-i-Taleem teachers and those employees who have been appointed to contract basis. He also reminded state government about their proposal to hike remuneration of SPO’s and others working on contractual basis in various departments. |
