| Azad marches forward to conquer Kashmir from NC, PDP | | | Jammu, April 26 Even as there is some time when the Government offices and the civil secretariat open in Srinagar; Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad, is on a charger planning to “conquer” Kashmir for the Congress. He has taken it on his shoulder to strengthen the roots, whatever strength they have, of the Congress in Kashmir, which were being swallowed by the PDP and the National Conference. Even if he has a busy schedule in Jammu, Azad flies to Srinagar and thereafter to distant places for addressing public rallies and return to the state’s winter capital in the evening. This schedule he has maintained during the last three weeks. During this period, Azad has visited Kulgam, Ganderbal Khan Sahib in Budgam, Kokernag in Anantnag district and today he addressed a largely attended public meeting in Bandipore. Except for Wakoor in Ganderbal where not more than 3,000 people were present, the rest of the rallies had between 6000 and 10,000 people that too a responsive crowd. Earlier he would not hesitate giving a dig, though vaguely, at the PDP leadership, of late he seems to have been emboldened by the response of people and has been highly vocal in emphasizing the success of the third roundtable conference assuring people that their problems and those of unemployed youth, destitutes and victims of militancy related violence would be resolved soon. He has shown his courage in berating those who were “trying to fish in troubled waters and disturb peace and tranquility”. He has warned such elements and said that “we will not allow them to succeed. ”At the same time his success in getting a responsive crowd to his rallies is not the success of the Congress because whether in Kulgam or in Khan Sahib or in Bandipore the responsive crowd was the result of efforts of non congress minister and legislators. In Kulgan his successful rally was the result of work done by local MLA M.Y.Tarigami,that in Khan Sahib by Hakim Mohd.Yasin,Transport Minister,of Usman Majid a local MLA of Bandipore area. His decision to give district status to Kulgam,Bandipore was also instrumental in Azad’s bid to conquer the areas without any opposition. Will Azad’s charger gallop in the PDP’s areas of influence or in those where the National Conference has its stronghold ? It is too early to predict Azad’s success in winning people’s hearts because his opposition to the PDP’s demand for withdrawal of troops has already enarlged the Mufti’s political frame. It has strengthened the congress roots in the Jammu region but caused considerable erosion in its base in the Kashmir valley. For the time being the Chief Minister seems to enjoy the glory of the stage managed pro-Azad slogan shouting people.
