| Congress on Animal Health opens | | | R S PURA APR 26 The two day International congress on advances in Zoo and Animal’s Health and Management and impact of diseases on conservation of wild animal was inaugurated today at SKUAST campus, RS Pura by Minister for Forest, Environment and Ecology, Qazi Mohammed Afzal. Speaking on this occasion, the Minister said that biodiversity is the integral art of our ecosystem and its conservation is of the most important challenges of the of the 21 century.However,changing environment like ice age followed by warm period and even drought, which exerted severe selection pressure, have been responsible for evolution of new species and extinction of others. Jammu & Kashmir with its varied agro climatic zones and geographical regions, support about 45 large mammalian species including carnivores ,the big and small cats,dogs,deer ,primates ,ungulates and rodent. Himalayan ranges of the state support some of the rare animals, which are now a part of most endangered species in the world namely (Kashmir stag), snow leopard . An enigmatic mammal is the barrel .Another animal of wild life enthusiast is the Himalayan black beer. He hoped that the ideas, which are likely to emerge from deliberations during there congress, will help in shaping future strategies for the conservation of wild animals. Meanwhile, Nagender Sharma, vice chancellor SKUAST, Jammu said that the management of wild life ecology, forestry, sociology, & economics. During past half century the socio economics pressure has been building up at a very rapid pace which has resulted in greater exploitation of natural resources and a large scale deforestation resulting in confinement of wild animal in comparative unproductive and unsafe patens of there habitat where they not only faced the scarcity of food & water and problems of in breeding but are more exposed to patches. The conflict of wild animal, domestic animal and human being at the interfaces of wild & civil life are making the life of wild life unsafe. As a result their number has declined considerably, so much that at present some species are extinct and other are in precarious conditions. He informed that better health management of wild animal through administrations of vaccines by injection, intranasal spray, Oral administrations using time release method are being developed. Moreover, there is an urgent need to control the spread of infection coming in contact with wild animals. Dean, SKUAST, R.S.Pura A K Srivasatava informed that about 300 distinguished scientist, conservationists, zoo veterinarians, NGO members, policy makers from the different part of the world would have be exchanging there veins and share rich experience MoS, agriculture Ajaz Ahmed Khan,B M Arora president association of Indian Zoo and Wild Life were also present on the occasion.
