| Protests over Kounsar Nag Yatra affect life across Kashmir | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Aug 1 : Normal life was affected in Kashmir in response to a call for protests by separatists against Kounsar Nag Yatra. The Yatra was halted by the government via Aharbal route Thursday. Clashes between protesters and the police were witnessed at several places including Srinagar, Anantnag and Sopore. The senior separatist leader and Hurriyat (G) Chairman, Syed Aali Geelani had called for protests after Friday prayers in protest against the Yatra. Geelani has called for general strike against the Yatra on Saturday. Geelani believes the Yatra will adversely impact the fragile environment of the area. He has equaled the Yatra to external aggression on Kashmir. The hardcore leader severely criticized the Chief Minister for taking a `hasty decision' on the Yatra. Meanwhile, the authorities arrested JKLGF chairman, Malik Muhammad Yasin from his residence. He was shifted to Kothi Bagh Police Station. Other leaders including Ashraf Sehrai, Mirwaiz Frooq and others were placed under house arrest. Following widespread protests, the government halted the first batch of pandit yatries. A Delhi based pundit organization has sought permission for the Yatra. The government had earlier given permission from Aharbal route in south Kashmir's Kulgam district. Pandits are scheduled to perform six-day puja at the glacial lake in south Kashmir. The pundits have taken strong exception to agitation over the Yatra. "Why has Geelani opposed the yatra when he very often invites pundits back to Kashmir," they said.
