| Police foil separatist plan of building mosque atop Hariparbat fortress | | | Srinagar,April 27 Prompt action by the police foiled Hurriyat Conference (G) plan of building a mosque atop Hariparbat fortress in the heart of the summer capital of the state. The plan was buried on time by the police which arrested six senior leaders of Hurriyat Conference (G). A senior police officer of the rank of DIG said today “we had no other alternative but to take these separatists in custody as they had planned to involve people in the mosque building programme.” The officer said that “as a result of prompt action against the hardliners a late evening appeal from the residence of Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who heads the Tehrik Hurriyat Conference,to people to come out in big number on Friday for rebuilding the mosque had no response.” The officer indicated that the six leaders may be arrested under the PSA in case they ventured to disturb peace and kick up communal tension.official sources said that the hardliners had issued an appeal to people to carry bricks with them while scaling the Hariparbat for reconstructing the mosque. The separatists have alleged that the mosque had been demolished by the paramilitary forces some years ago. However, official sources said that a structure had been raised on a piece of Government land without proper permission. The sources denied reports that the Hurriyat(G) leaders had been arrested for foiling their plan of addressing a press conference. They said despite their known views on political affairs the Government has never “muzzled their freedom of speech.” “But we cannot tolerate any unlawful activities aimed at disrupting peace,” the sources said.
