| Sanitising 300-km long Jammu-Srinagar highway begins | | | Jammu,April 27 Security forces have started sanitizing the 300-km long Jammu-Srinagar national highway against explosives that might have been planted by militants in order to ensure incident free travel of Government employees who will be heading for the state’s summer capital from Saturday in connection with the biannual Durbar move.With offices having closed in Jammu on Friday employees have started packing files and other office records in trucks and and SRTC buses have been booked for the move employees. Police said that special security pickets have been set up at various places between Udhampur and Banihal,considered to be sensitive spots.In addition to this road opening parties will carry out screening of the highway and its adjacent mountain belts hours before the convoy of trucks and buses,carrying employees,start from Jammu.The road opening parties have been equipped with sophisticated metal detectors and other equipments for identifying any explosive material and for defusing IEDs,landmines or grenades. Teams of police and paramilitary forces have been deployed at various spots on the highway with orders to shoot down anyone found trying to attack the convoy of employees.These teams have been directed to carry out round the clock patrolling of the highway till the last employee reaches Srinagar.The offices are scheduled to reopen in Srinagar on May 7. Police said that the drivers of buses,carrying employees,and trucks,carrying office records,have been directed to stop at particular spots for rest and refreshment.They have been asked to have minimum halting period at limited places.Another instruction is that the convoy should move together because it would have the required security cover.The most sensitive areas on the highway between Kud and Awantipora have been given a high security cover. The wayside restaurants and hotels have also been kept under surveillance so that no antinational element managed to sneak in these eating shops in the guise of customers for harming employees.
