| Railways lose money at platform ticket counter | | | Jammu,April 27 ( The Railways lose between Rs.6,000 and Rs.10,000 per day on account of non enforcement of the rules providing for entry on the platform with required tickets. An official at the platform ticket counter at Jammu railways station said today “we get between Rs.300 and Rs.500 a day from the sale of platform tickets.” He confirmed that more than 4,000 people, escorting the passengers or receiving them, enter the platform a day. He said each platform ticket costs Rs. three and if every visitor to the platform was charged Rs. three the Railways could earn anything upto Rs.10,000 a day. Those managing the parking zone at the railway station said that between 2000 and 2500 cars, matadors and over 400 three-wheelers remain parked, at various hours, since early morning to late evenings. Those who park their carks come either to see off their relations and friends or receive them. This very figure confirms that the Railways officials and the police do not enforce the rules for entry on the platform. A senior officer of the Railways, who did not want to be quoted, said that “we can earn more revenue if we enforce the rules strictly.” He said “we had launched drive for raising the revenue by making it mandatory for visitors to the platform for buying tickets but owing to paucity of staff the drive could not be sustained for a longer period.” The officer said “people here do not have the temperament and attitude for buying the platform tickets. Entry into the platform without tickets, has been a routine for the last several years.” He said that during the Navratra periods the three platforms remain over crowded as more than 20,000 passengers arrive per day from various stations in Jammu for visiting Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine. The officer admitted that “if we are able to realize platform ticket fee from every visitor the amount could be utilized on developing facilities for the passengers.”
