| UP elections uncover crorepati candidates | | | BL KAK NEW DELHI, Apr 28: Election Watch, an NGO, has brought to the fore a revealing story vis-a-vis a section of contestants in the ongoing Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh (UP). And according to IC Dwivedi, patron of the Election Watch, those candidates are given tickets "who can make contribution to party funds". In remarkable irony of sorts, the two prties, which hold sway over the backward and poor of Uttar Pradesh, are the ones with maximum number of crorepati candidates. According to a survey done by Election Watch, the Samajwadi Party tops this list with 27 per cent crorepatis in the fray, while the Bahujan Samajwadi Party(BSP) with 26 per cent crorepatis comes a close second. On the other hand, the BJP has fielded 20 per cent crorepatis and the Congress 16 per cent. On an average 10 per cent of candidates in UP are crorepatis and surprisingly 70 per cent of them do not even have a PAN card. BSP follows Dalit icon BR Ambedkar’s ideology, while UP Chief Minister, Mulayam Singh Yadav, calls himself a follower of socialist political leader, Ram Manohar Lohia. But while Lohia and Ambedkar might be poles apart in their thinking, even a party worker in UP understands that one thing which binds these two parties and that is money. It could be a plea for votes or for contributions but in Uttar Pradesh money power it seems outscores ideologies. If UP was an independent State then it would be the sixth most populous in the world. Over four out of 10 people in UP are illiterate, while the national average is just over three. UP is known for its high criminal record and in spite of this there are only 74 policemen per every lakh persons.
