Residents of Rajouri demand supply of safe drinking water
8/10/2014 11:17:10 PM

Early Times Report

RAJOURI, Aug 10: With the ill planning of PHE department in executing water supply schemes to provide safe drinking water, entire Rajouri district is suffering huge shortage of drinking water. The water supply schemes executed in the past have become defunct with the ill planning by the concerned officials as the water at most of the places of these schemes has either dried or has changed the locations resulting in making these schemes non-functional. People have been compelled to hold protests against the PHE officials / district administration as safe drinking water has become out of their reach and they are forced to drink contaminated water either from natural sources or from the rivers. "Rajouri city which is also a district headquarter has also been facing acute shortage of potable water as most of the schemes in the city were installed about 50 years ago," said a resident. The inhabitants of ITI complex Mohalla, ward No 2 and Malik market held a mass protest against the PHE department and alleged that for the last few days the drinking water has not been supplied in these areas which is just 500 meters away from PHE Executive Engineer office-cum-residence complex. "Most of the pipes laid in these areas either have been blocked or got damaged resulting in huge loss of water. But despite several representation the concerned officials don't even care to visit the spots" Said Manoj and Tahir Lone. They warned of large scale protest demonstration in future if the concerned officials failed to rectify their problem of safe drinking water within next few days.
