| Agricultural Diversification finding its roots in Jammu | | | DEVENDER PADHA JAMMU | June 24
It's not an easy job to venture out into unknown territory and achieve success. Diversification of agriculture practices is also one such task from which most of our farmers want to escape due to the lack of information and courage to make a shift. But, courageous and far sighted people accept the challenge and achieve what ever they want. Kuldeep Khajuria, a young and progressive farmer from Sohanjana area of Jammu District has come forward to adopt the practice of agricultural diversification and it seems agricultural diversification is finding its roots in Jammu. Just 2-3 years ago, Khajuria was into farming as usual growing customary vegetables for local market as well. With the introduction of technology mission on Horticulture he switched over to new techniques and hi-value crops. The new introductions in his fields are Chinese Cabbage, Summer Squash, Pickling Cucumber (Gherkins), Baby Corn and Broccoli. Moreover, strawberry produced by him also rewarded him handsomely. He is also laying hands on organic farming to further intensify his efforts. "Khajuria's success is attributed to his obsession for new inputs and technology. Like him others could also reap the benefits of agricultural diversification process provided there efforts must be sincere", said M.Farooq Hakak, Director, Agriculture. He also informed that throughout the world farmers have opted for this kind of agricultural practice to uplift their socio-economic condition. Keeping in view the diverse agro climatic conditions of the state it becomes important to diversify agricultural practices. He added that it would help the farmers to earn handsomely and regularly. Department of Agriculture and Horticulture are extending all sorts of assistances along with the latest technology to farmers for the facilitation of agricultural diversification. Progressive farmers like Kuldeep Khajuria are encouraging their fellow brethren to follow the suit and with each passing day number of farmers switching over to diversification is on increase.
