| Modern fruit processing units to come up at Poonch, Surankote | | | POONCH, MAY 01 In order to exploit horticulture potential in Poonch district, the government will set up a modern fruit processing unit at an equi-distance from Surankote and Poonch. For the purpose, about 40 kanals of land will be identified shortly. This was announced by Minister for Horticulture and Tourism Mr. Mohammad Dilawar Mir during his visit to Poonch and Surankote yesterday. The Minister was accompanied by District Development Commissioner Poonch Mr J. S. Pachnanda, Director Horticulture Jammu Mr. M. S. Qasba, Director Tourism Jammu Mr. Ajay Khajuria, Chief Engineer PHE Jammu Mr. V. K. Goswami, Chief Engineer Irrigation and Flood Control Jammu Mr. V.K. Abrol and concerned district officers and engineers. The Minister said that vast horticulture potential of Surankote, which produces about 18000 tonnes of best quality fruits including Nakh, plum, sandy pear and walnuts, would be exploited optimally, adding that cold chain facilities would be provided to the fruit growers under public-private participation. He announced a grant of Rs.1.64 crore for construction of Tourist Reception Center at Kanoian near Poonch, adding that Yatri Niwas would also be constructed at holy religious places of Gurdwara Nangali Sahib, Budha Amarnath and Sain Mira Sahib each costing Rs. 53 lakh. He also announced to construct a tourist cottage at Noori Chhamb at a cost of Rs. 50 lakh and creation of wayside facilities at Bhimber Gali at a cost of Rs. 30 lakh. He said the centre has sanctioned Rs. 20 crore for Tourism Development Authority Poonch, out of which, Rs. 2 crore have already been released. While taking stock of drinking water facilities in Surankote, the Minister said that the area would be brought under the ambit of Accelerated Rural Water Supply Programme to complete various ongoing water supply schemes speedily. Mr. Dilawar also reviewed the pace of progress on various drinking water, irrigation and flood control schemes in Poonch and gave on the spot orders for augmenting various water supply schemes and completing flood protection works in different areas of the district.
