| Security forces fearing rise in INFILTRATION FROM LoC | | | Jammu, May 02, With rising mercury levels security forces, operating in Jammu and Kashmir, are fearing sudden increase in the level of infiltration of militants from across the LOC in recent weeks. Police said today “we have reports that groups of militants sneaked into the state from across Kupwara sector in recent weeks.” “ During the months of late March and April militants had crossed into Jammu sector from across Poonch and Rajouri. But their number was far less than the groups that infiltrated from across Kupwara during the same period,”according to the police. A senior police officer said that it was for the first time that on Tuesday groups of militants were spotted in Phalmarg area,25 kms from Kupwara, and an encounter with the police followed in which one special police officer was injured. He said more than 10 militants managed to escape indicating that a peaceful area like Phalmarg had started registering the presence of militants. The police confirmed that as a result of timely action by the troops, guarding the border, several infiltration bids had been foiled. But those who succeeded in crossing into the state took advantage of the difficult border terrain. In reply to a question the police officer said “we are examining the reason behind infiltration. We are in the process of determining whether these groups of militants have infiltrated into Jammu and Kashmir after deciding to bid farewell to weapons or they have been pushed into the state to raise the level of violence.” It said that preliminary investigations had revealed that majority of militants, who had sneaked into Jammu and Kashmir in recent weeks had plans of assisting those already operating in the valley in carrying out armed and grenade attacks on political leaders, and vital Government installations because those who had decided to drop their guns usually approach, through middlemen, border guards for a safe passage. In recent months more than 30 infiltrators had been given safe passage after they surrendered their weapons and explosives to the troops. It said that “we have received reports that groups of militants had been brought close to the border across Kupwara,Poonch,Rajouri and Uri after the mountain routes became passable with the melting of snows. These militants were in the look out for an opportunity for infiltrating into Jammu and Kashmir.”(
