| INTUC Mahila wing to work for gender equality, end of sexual harassment | | | Jammu, May 2 Indian National Trade Union Congress today held a meeting to discuss various issues which included increase of women participation in trade unions, sexual harassment at work place, effective implementation of National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme, gender equality and reconstitution of CWWC and state committees. The meeting today commenced with lighting of the traditional lamp by senior INTUC leaders and dignitaries. In order to encourage the participation of women in trade Union activities, the INTUC CWWC has decided to take some serious action in this regard. The state branches have been asked to take the initiative of taking the message of INTUC across by organizing sensitization programmes and workshops and throwing light on the problems faced by women at their workplace. It was also stated that INTUC would come forward and protect women from exploitation and harassment by establishing unions in upcoming sectors especially in the BPO. This can be done by campaigning the importance of unions, inviting women from ITES companies. It was also exhorted that INTUC would organize awareness programmes against sexual harassment at work places. Appreciating the progressive steps taken by government of India of adding 130 new districts to National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme. It was also stated that the INTUC CWWC cells should ensure that women below poverty line or working in unorganized sectors should benefit from the scheme. The meeting also said that INTUUC should practice the policies put forth by International Labour Organization on gender equality and mainstreaming and must approach the Ministry of Women and Child Development and National Commission for Women and ensure that gender equality is brought into a reality in the country. The meeting also discussed the reconstitution of INTUC CWWC and for that purpose new members would be inducted into the organization. It was therefore decided that State branches would nominate five active women members from their respective states to be included in the Central Committee of the organization. Earlier the programme commenced with the lighting of the ceremonial by the dignitaries. The inaugural address was made Suman S Mahaldar, chairperson of INTUC, mahila wing, which was followed by addresses by Shashi. B. Kapoor, general secretary, Ashok Singh , vice president INTUC, Shiv Kumar Sharma, president INTUC J&K., Veena Singh chairperson, R&B minister Gulchain Singh Charak. The highlight of the meeting was an illuminating address by G Sanjeeva Reddy, president, AITUC.
