| Biennial workshop of AICRPDA inaugurated | | | R.S.PURA, MAY 2 Vice Chancellor Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agriculture Sciences and Technology Prof. Nagendra Sharma today inaugurated 4-day 21st Biennial Workshop of the All India Coordinated Research Project for Dryland Agriculture (AICRPDA) by lighting the traditional lamp at SKUAST here this afternoon. Director Research SKUAST Dr. A. K. Bakshi, Project Coordinator AICRPDA Dr. G. Subba Reddy, Director CRIDA Dr. Y. S. Ramakrishna, Secretary AICRPDA Dr. Mahinder Singh, Mr. Sanjeev Sharma, scientists, faculty members and other senior officers of the university were also present. Addressing gathering, Prof Nagendra Sharma emphasized the need for conservation and management of natural resources judiciously to improve the agricultural productivity of rainfed areas and improve the socio-economic status of the poor farmers of Kandi area. He said that there should be collective efforts for conservation of soil and water especially rain water, it should be conserved in rain water harvest tanks so that it can be used in the need of hour. The watershed approach for development of rainfed agriculture has now been adopted as a key strategy for both resource conservation and productivity enhancement. Vice Chancellor SKUAST said that dryland agriculture concept ‘low external input sustainable agriculture’ approach should be for income generation and livelihood security for rainfed farming community. Panj Panchayat can be formed for efficient and judicious use of water. Prof. Sharma advised experts from SKUAST-Jammu to take advantage of the presence of experts of all over the country to actively participate in the deliberations and drive maximum advantage in terms of greater understanding of the issues and learn from the experience of participants from all over the country. Vice Chancellor SKUAST said that about 120 scientists from across the country working on dryland agriculture in different agri-eco systems are participating to discuss their research activities. The objectives of the workshop is to have a critical look at the technologies ready for transfer in improving the agriculture production from the various production systems in the rainfed agro-eco system. This work would be reviewing the research programmes and technologies generated by the various scientists located at different state agricultural universities in efficient management of the natural resources in the rainfed areas and techniques for soil and water conservation, rain water management, integrated nutrient management including strategies and opportunities for organic farming, alternate land use systems including agro-forestry, agri-horti and horti-pastural systems that can promote income generation and alternate on farm and off farm livelihood opportunities to the farming community and also provide the needed fodder and feed to the livestock. Later, Vice Chancellor Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agriculture Sciences and Technology Prof. Nagendra Sharma also released five books Annual Report AICRPDA, Use of bio-fertilizers, techniques of soil mapping, vermin composed and methodology for preparing enrich composed. Dr. Mohinder Singh presented vote of thanks on the occasion.
