5/3/2007 12:14:15 AM

JAMMU, MAY 02
deficit of portable water supply caused due to damage of Setlee filter and storage plant would overcome by the end of month of July this year. Minister for PHE Mr Mohd Dilawar Mir after inaugurating a percolation well here this morning.
Minister for Health and Medical Education Mr Mangat Ram Sharma and MLA Mr Mula Ram, besides JMC corporators and senior officers of the department were also present on the occasion.
The percolation well constructed by PHE Department with technical assistance of Central Ground Water Board Jammu has a discharge capacity of 20 lakh gallons per day.
Construction of the percolation well was taken up as a short term measure to compensate the short fall of potable water created after the damage of one of the plant at Setlee in flash floods during September last year.
Besides using the ground aquifers, the well has been artificially recharged by the River Bank Infiltration (RBI).
The type of structures also enables natural filtration, which is far economical than conventional technique used for removal of particles.
Giving details about the steps taken up by the department to meet the drinking water requirements, Minister said soon after the damage of one of the plant, ten hand pumps with a discharge capacity of 30 lakh gallons were installed within a short period of two months. He said the construction of the percolation well was another short term measures. He however, hoped that the drinking water deficit in the city of temples would be completely overcome after the completion of the construction of the second intake pump house at Setlee. He said the pump house is likely to be commissioned in the month of July this year.
Minister said there is a need to pay special attention to rural areas as well, adding that most of the rural areas even in the outskirts of Jammu city are faced with water scarcity. He said engineers must not confine themselves to cities but also pay due attention to the rural areas.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Sharma congratulated PHE Minister and his team of engineers on the inauguration of the percolation well and hoped that additional supply through this new source would provide relief to water scarce areas of the city. He also appreciated the efforts taken by the department for compensating the shortfall of potable water in the backdrop of damage of one of the plant at Setlee.
He also called for early release of water through the new source. He said though the shortage problem would be overcome to a large extent once the supply from the well is started, but even than the supply through tankers should continue to ensure that people may not suffer during the harsh summer season.
Member Legislative Assembly Mr Mula Ram also spoke on the occasion.
