Protestors go berserk; SI among 4 cops injured, 3 vehicles torched in Sopore

Srinagar, May 02
At least four police personnel were injured, two of them critically, and three vehicles were torched when a mob went berserk after a child was crushed to death by an over-speedy passenger bus in Sopore area of Baramulla district in North Kashmir, here on Wednesday afternoon.

Reports reaching here revealed that six year old Umar Habeeb son of Habeeb-ullah was crushed to death by an over-speedy passenger bus near Chnikipora Park on Sopore-Baramulla Road, this morning.

Shopkeepers and pedestrians soon assembled at the site of the accident and staged a massive protest demonstration against the traffic authorities.

As the driver and cleaner of the bus fled from the spot, the angry mob targeted the vehicle and set in on fire.

A contingent of police led by a Sub Inspector reached the spot to control the angry mob, which till than had gone out of control. The protestors, eyewitnesses told News Agency of Kashmir, attacked the police party and pelted stones.

The protestors soon targeted the police gypsy and set it on fire. "The vehicle was completely damaged in the fire", reports revealed.

Four police personnel, including a Sub Inspector were injured in the ding-dong battle between two sides. Two of them have been identified as SI Feroz Ahmed and Constable Muhammad Ashraf.

It was reliably learnt that Constable Ashraf has received critically injuries in his eye.
The mob later attacked a private Tata Sumo parked nearby and smashed its window panes.

Confirming the reports, Additional Superintendent of Police Sopore Imtiyaz Ahmed told NAK over phone that the injured cops have been hospitalized. He said that the police personnel were deputed on the spot to pacify the mob, which however went out of control and attacked the police party.

The situation was said to be tense in the area, till the last report came in.
