JAMMU, MAY 3 Union Minster for Over Seas Mr. Oscar Fernandes today said that hundred Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) would be upgraded as Centers of Excellence every year to promote vocational education in the country. . Mr. Oscar Fernandes was addressing 267th national Working Committee meeting of Indian National Trade Union Congress here this morning. INTUC president and MP G. Sanjeeva Reddy, besides Jammu and Kashmir Minister for Health and Medical Education Mr. Mangat Ram Sharma, Minister for Rural Development, Jugal Kishore, Minister for Roads and Buildings Gulchain Singh Charak, state Chairman INTUC, Shiv Kumar Sharma and state General Secretary INTUC were prominent among others present on the occasion. Union Minter said that under a special plan one thousand such institutes would be converted into the Excellence Centers by introducing latest and market oriented vocational courses. He said the GOI would provide Rs 2.50 crore assistance to the states for setting up such centers. Referring to the measures taken up for safeguarding the interests of the working class, Mr Oscar said that it is the endeavor of the union government to ensure the implementation of the minimum wage structure of Rs 62 fixed at the national in every state. He said it becomes the moral duty of the INTUC workers to see that workers are getting the wages as per the set norms and added that the main objective of fixing minimum wage is to eradicate bounded labour system which is still prevalent in many areas of the country. He said it is highly encouraging that in states like Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir, Labour classes are getting handsome wages ranging from Rs hundred to one hundred fifty. Time has come for the trade union movement to work in close cooperation with the political parties in order to further the interests of the workers, said president Indian National Trade Union Congress, G Sanjeeva Reddy, during the Annual General Body meeting here today. Reddy said that the time has come for improving better relations between INTUC and Congress, so that a cohesive relationship is formed between the two organizations. In this regard, he said that efforts re being made to ensure representation of INTUC members in All India Congress Committee as well as state Congress committees. He exhorted the trade union workers to come forward and join the Congress in order to ensure that voice of the INTUC remains relevant and politically powerful. Prominent trade union leaders, who were present on the occasion included general secretary Rajendra Prasad Singh, KK Nair, Paban Singh Ghatowar, M Raghavaih, Subroto Mukherjee, Ashok Singh, PL Subaiah and SK Yadav.
