CRPF recruitment drive may foment regional discrimination: BJP
5/4/2007 11:15:27 PM

Jammu, May 4
The state unit of the BJP has taken a serious view of the decision of the CRPF authorities on initiating recruitment drive only for youths in the Kashmir valley.
Terming it as an assault on “country’s secular democracy and rule of law, vice president of the BJP,Prof. Hari Om,told mediamen in Jammu on Friday that by sidelining youth in Jammu and Ladakh regions in the proposed recruitment drive the centre and the state Governments “were determined to outrage the sensitivities of the people of Jammu and Ladakh.”
“We feel stung by the CRPF decision and treat it as an insult to people of Jammu and Ladakh,”he said adding that “the BJP is of firm opinion that the CRPF’s decision has been the outcome of the plan of the Congress led Governments in the centre and in Jammu and Kashmir.”
Prof. Hari Om said the union Home Ministry’s assertion that special recruitment drive in the valley was called for because people there alone had been victims of militancy. He said that people in the muslim dominated areas of Poonch,Rajouri,Doda besides the upper reaches in Udhampur and Kathua had also been main sufferers of terrorist activities. He said special recruitment drive in paramilitary forces and the police was warranted in the Jammu region where the rate of unemployment was over 69 per cent against less than 30 per cent in the Kashmir valley.
He said that nearly three lakh posts in the Government and semi Government department were held by people belonging to the Kashmir valley and about 30 per cent of the total jobs were in the hands of people hailing from the Jammu and Ladakh regions. Holding the Congress responsible for all the political and economic ills in Jammu and Kashmir the BJP leader said that the same congress had, in league with PDP,NC,CPIM and PDF,defeated private members bills seeking adoption of one national flag as the state flag, reduction of the life of Assembly from six to five years, grant of fundamental rights for refugees from west Pakistan, parity between Kashmir and Jammu as far as seats in the Assembly was concerned and protection of Hindu temples and shrines in Kashmir.
He said the same Congress had played a key role in getting a private members bill adopted which sought introduction of shariat laws in Jammu and Kashmir and one year punishment for those showing disrespect for the state flag.He announced that the BJP would campaign against the Congress and the CRPF if they encouraged regional discrimination and fight against communal and discriminatory policies of the Congress
