| Left parties may withdraw support from UPA Govt | | | BL KAK NEW DELHI, May 6: Communist Party of India's general secretary, AB Bardhan, has announced that the Left parties will meet after the Presidential elections to consider withdrawing support from the Congress-led coalition government at the Centre. The annoucement was made by Bardhan during his interaction with Karan Thapar on Devil's Advocate--a programme telecast by the CNN-IBN television channel. The CPI leader revealed that he was under enormous pressure from his party and the Left to reconsider support to the government. Bardhan severely criticised Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, and Finance Minister P Chidambaram, for their policies. Said Bardhan: “This time I mean it. It is not just a threat … In fact the party is pushing me. They are telling me, again and again, what is this going on? The Government does not listen to you people. They don’t carry out any demands that you make". In reply to a question, Bardhan said that the four Left parties (CPI, RSP and Forward Bloc) would meet after the UP polls and the Presidential elections to “seriously consider” the question of withdrawing support. He said that although the CPI (M) outnumbered the other three parties, this issue would not be decided on the strength of numbers. He said that he would push strenuously for acceptance of the CPI view that the time for withdrawing support had come. Bardhan said: "It is not a question of vote, of three versus one. It is a question of persuading, arguing and discussing". Karan Thapar's pointed question to Bardhan: "Will you push your line strenuously?" Bardhan's reply: " Why else am I saying this publicly? Otherwise I would have kept it to myself". Bardhan blamed the UPA for the improving fortunes of the BJP and went on to state that Manmohan Singh has not measured up to the expectations the Left parties had of him.
