Rana demands ST status for Paharies
Blames Government for dividing people on the name of ST’
5/7/2007 11:56:17 PM

Mendhar May 07 -
This is for the first time during last three decades of Pahari movement in Jammu and Kashmir when any Gujjar leader has come openly to support the Phari community for their Schedule Tribe demand.
Pahari leaders, with out wasting any time, have welcomed the statement of Gujjar leader saying that this will help in the reunion of both the communities which had literarily parted ways with each other since one community was enrolled in the list of Scheduled Tribe communities by the Central Government in 1990.
The Pahari community was surprised when a prominent Gujjar leader and MLA Mendhar, Javaid Rana, while addressing a public meeting at Naka Majhari in Mendhar, announced his full support to the on going struggle of Pahari community for ST status on Sunday. Not only he verbally supported the Pahari movement, but also assured the community that he will not hesitate to give any sacrifice if this injustice was not removed by the government. He said both Gujjars and Paharies have similar socio economic status and both are putting up in the similar type of geographical conditions and both deserve for the equal treatment. “With a deep conspiracy, the Central Government enrolled the Gujjar community in the list of Schedule Tribe communities and left the next neighbored protesting for the same status. In fact, this was the conspiracy of the government to divide this big chunk of population residing particularly in Rajouri and Poonch border region”, alleged Rana. He said that he has made up his mind to fight against this injustice and will continue his struggle till the Paharies are also enrolled in the list of Schedule Tribe communities.
While speaking on the occasion, Provincial President Pahari Welfare Association, Mohammad Azeem Saggar, said this public meeting was organized by the Pahari people in the honour of Javaid Rana after he pleaded the causes of Pahari people during his speech in the presence of Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad at Mendhar during his recent visit of the tehsil . He said “we are highly thankful to Rana for supporting our cause for which we have been fighting for the past thirty years. And now the government has no excuse to delay our right”, said Sagar adding that this support will also help in strengthening the brotherhood between the two communities.
Shabir Ahmed Khan, Vice Chairman state Pahari Development Board, while welcoming the support of a prominent Gujjar leader Rana for ST status to the Paharies, said that this is for the first time in the thirty year old history of Pahari movement in the State when any prominent Gujjar leader has come out openly to support their just and genuine cause. “I being the Vice Chairman of Pahari Advisory Development Board welcome the statement of Rana, he said and added that this is really a very much positive step of any Gujjar leader and asserted that personally wanted to work for brotherhood between both the communities with the likeminded leaders like Javaid Rana”, said Khan
