Though many such interactions have taken place in Jammu in the past, what made today's interaction unique was the fact that four students organizations of Ladakhi students working in Jammu, joined hand together to bring students from all the far flung areas of Ladakh together on a single platform under All Ladakh Joint Students Federation. Today's interaction primarily aimed at highlighting the problems faced by Ladakhi student community in Jammu and it was organized jointly by All Ladakhi Students' Union, Students Association of Ladakh, All Zanskar Students Union and All Kargil Students Union under the umbrella of All Ladakh Joint Students Federation. Ghulam Mehdi, Secretary, All Ladakh Joint Students Federation (ALJSU), while welcoming the chief guest Prof Mattoo, said that there were hundreds of students studying in various colleges of Jammu and also in Jammu University. Coming from a difficult and land locked region which remains cut off from rest of the country during most of the time of the year, the Ladakhi students face many difficulties during their stay in Jammu. Stanzin, president of All Ladakh Students Union, presented a memorandum to the chief guest, also said that it was need of the hour that all the students get together and work towards a strong, developed and prosperous Ladakh. Professor P. Stobdan, Director, Centre for Strategic and Regional Studies, University of Jammu presented a key note address. During the interaction with the Vice chancellor, Professor Amitabh Mattoo, the Ladakhi student community raised various issues including allotment of hostel facilities to Ladakh students on the basis of distance from Jammu and not on the basis of serial number, opening of Jammu University library to the students from colleges who do not possess library card of JU and thus are not allowed to study in the library. Besides, the issues like the difficulties faced by the students community in transportation particularly during winter to leh and the high cost of Air fare, setting up of separate cells of State Public Service Commissions (PSC) and Service Selection Recruitment board (SSRB) in ladakh so the students, Candidates from ladakh can appear in written tests and interviews conducted by PSC and SSRB in, Ladakh itself thereby saving their unnecessary expenditure and time also came under discussion. The students also requested the VC to open a distance education cell of the University of Jammu at Kargil/leh so that students from rural and poor family backgrounds can avail the benefit of higher studies. The students also felt that a full-fledged library should be opened in leh/Kargil not only for reference purpose, but also for studies with good capacity and other modern facilities like canteen, newspaper and magazines, computerized catalogue, heating system, internet facility, conference hall etc. so that students can compete for various exams by studying in ladakh itself. The All ladakh Joint Students Federation stressed for a grave need to have good and well known coaching institutes for various competitive exams like IAS/KAS/MBBS/BDS etc and other new and emerging career options in ladakh. Besides, new subjects like Geology, Sociology, Geography, Computer and Commerce in leh/Kargil degree college/higher Secondary School level should also be opened up, the Federation said. Professor Mattoo assured the ladakhi student community some positive response from the University. He said he well understands the problems being faced by ladakhi students as they are away from their homes. He said he would try his best to address to all these issues.
