| Panjwakhter temple issue: People hold protest again | | | Jammu, May 8 Members of Panjwakhther Sangarsh Committee today held a day long demostration and burnt the effigy of the deputy commissioner, Jammu. The people protested against the decision of the DC, Jammu in which he had asked both the groups to elect their Mahants and install them on the Gaddi at the historic Panjwakhter temple in the heart of Jammu City. According to reports, DC, Jammu had called a meeting to sort the dispute regarding the appointment of a mahant in the temple. During the meeting the DC, Jammu asked the two groups to sort out the matter amicably and install two mahants, one from each side. Unhappy with the decision taken by the Deputy Commissioner, members of the Sangharsh Committee walked out of the meeting. The later assembled at the temple and started a protest against the decision and also burnt the effigy of DC, Jammu. President of the Panjwakhter Sangarhsg Committee, Ashok Gupta, today said that this decision was wrong and would not be accepted by the people. “We are not going to accept any other person but a mahant, who is acceptable to the local people will be appointed”. Here, it must be mentioned the seat of head priest fell vacant after the death of Parshu Ram Giri from Juna akhara, Haridwar. However, dispute arose when locals tried to install Mahant Panjwakhter Giri instead of the Mahant from Juna Akhara, who have held the seat traditionally.
