| Devastated by floods, Kashmiris dread onset of winter | | | Shakeel A Khan
BUDGAM, Sept 23 : With Omar Abdullah & company having being `washed away' by the devastating flood, the commoners, who now are shelter less, have more to worry about as the merciless winter is going to make inroads into the valley. Not to talk about the rehabilitation of the flood hit, the government has even failed to dispatch its teams to assess the damage caused by the flood fury. The commoners are left with no means that would sustain them in the harsh winters since Kashmir valley is one of the very few cold places in the world. The flood has broken the back of the people so much so that the beard can be seen on the every common man depicting their utter frustration as a result of the devastating flood. "It would have been better had we been washed away by the flood waters because the government has let us down in this hour of grief despite their tall claims that every sufferer will be rehabilitated. By announcing free ration for six months isn't enough to keep the wheel of life moving. It requires pragmatism on part of the government toinfuse some kind of confidence in to people," said Javaid Ahmad from Kawoosa Budgam, who was talked to by the Early Times. Javaid went on saying that the coalition government has been completely exposed and its leaders have no right on the earth to contest the coming assembly elections as they have failed miserably when there was no room for the failure. Javaid questioned the efficiency of the government by saying that the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced the opening of the civil secretariat which the authorities have failed to clear so for. As this correspondent went around the Narbal locality in the district Budgam, many people could be seen in the make shift shelters weeping over their poor luck. There, like many other parts of the Kashmir Valley, the devastation could be clearly seen caused by flood fury. The roads and the houses have been damaged and crops marooned by the flood water. But what is astonishing that nobody from the administration or from the corridors of power visited the area. When the Early Times talked to Pervaiz Ahmad to know about his opinion, he was quick to accuse sitting MlA from Budgam of inaction. He didn't bother to pay a visit to the affected area to take stock of the situation that rose out of the devastating flood. According to Pervaiz, this flood has come as a blessing in disguise for the people in power because the relief that will be pouring from the center will go into the pockets of these people. People belonging to the villages of Aarath, Churpora and many adjusant villages are up in the arms against the government for failing to restore the electricity to these villages which according to the locals got snapped prior to the flood. |
