| DEFENCE COMMUNICATION SEMINAR commences today | | | Jammu, 09 May 2007
Defence Communication Seminar (DEFCOM) 2007 is being conducted at New Delhi, commencing Thursday. The theme for seminar is “Strategies for Future Defence Networks and Relevance of Electromagnetic Interference/ Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMI/EMC) in future Battlefields. The Seminar is being conducted for a period of three days, from 10 May to 12 May 07. The inaugural session will be conducted on 10 May 07. Shri AK Antony, Hon’ble Raksha Mantri is to be the Chief Guest and General JJ Singh, Chief of Army Staff, will be the guest of honour during the inaugural session. The closing session will be chaired by Hon’ble Raksha Rajya Mantri Shri M Pallam Raju on 12 May 07. The Defence Communication Seminar christened as DEFCOM, is an annual event, jointly conducted by Corps of Signals of the Indian Army and the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII). The seminar aims to improve the synergy between the Armed Forces and the Telecom, IT Industry. It is an ideal forum in which the Armed Forces highlight their peculiar communication and IT requirements so that the industry can align their policies and products to be able to provide best possible solutions for the Armed Forces. The communication infrastructure of the Indian Army is undergoing a paradigm shift from Platform Centric to Network Centric Warfare. The erstwhile voice predominant network has been replaced by a state-of-the-art packet switched infrastructure, which can handle voice, video and data simultaneously, also called “Triple Play” in telecom parlance. The communication media consists of optical fibers, digital microwave radios, satellites and tactical wireless equipment. Future battlefields will be cluttered with a plethora of electromagnetic emitters which would include communication equipment, radars, jammers etc. Management of the electromagnetic space to avoid interference amongst these systems would be a major challenge. Future wars will be very short and intense with flexibility and mobility of forces being the key. The winner would be the one who can concentrate his forces at the decisive point quicker than the opponent. To achieve this, the communication infrastructure needs to be survivable, robust and secure. Reliance on wireless communication networks would be tremendous and issues related to electromagnetic interference and compatibility would play a paramount role in the success during battle. The Indian Army has set its vision on being Network Enabled by the year 2009 and being ‘Network Centric’ by the year 2012. Network upgrade is an ongoing process and DEFCOM 2007 aims at gathering views form experts in the Armed Forces, the Industry Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Ministry of Defence and academia in order to arrive at a consensus on the most appropriate way forward. The seminar will also provide the Indian Industry an insight into network requirements from the Defence Forces perspective. It will also act as a sounding board wherein network planners and managers of the Defence Forces will apprise the Industry of challenges and complexities of interoperability and synchronization of the Defence Networks. DEFCOM INDIA 2007 will provide and ideal platform to the Indian Industry to interact with a wide cross section of Defence Force officers so that a well – coordinated strategy for future Defence Networks may be formulated, said a PIB (Defence Wing) release.
