Distribution of free ration led to confusion, scuffle in Kashmir
10/1/2014 11:08:20 PM
Srinagar, Oct 1 : Announcement of distribution of free ration has led to confusion and scuffle at several places in the Kashmir Valley, including Srinagar, where people alleged that they were not provided any relief.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced that every family would be provided 50 kg free ration in September and later 35 kg for subsequent five months free of cost.
This led to confusion as store keepers of the Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CA&PD) at several places alleged that they had not received any written order from the government for free ration, which led to confusion and scuffle at many areas. At some places, the store keepers distributed ration free of cost through mohalla committees, with the assurance that people would have to pay in case the government would not accept it.However, in some areas, people alleged that despite announcement by Mr Abdullah they were provided only 25 kg or 30 kg. People in some areas alleged that they were asked to pay for the ration. The CA&PD officials claimed that they have distributed thousands of quintals of free ration to the affected.
People in some parts of the valley had been protesting demanding that they were not provided free ration.
They alleged that a senior cabinet minister distributed free gas cylinders in the downtown area, ignoring other mourned people in the city.Meanwhile, people have been facing acute shortage of vegetables and other essentials in Srinagar city.
Mostly vegetable crops have been damaged due to floods, particularly in the Dal Lake and south and Central Kashmir.
Shortage of vegetables had resulted in increase in the prices of essentials, particularly vegetables. A kg of Kashmiri sag, which was being sold at Rs 20 to Rs 30 a kg costs now Rs 80 to Rs 90 a kg in the city.Similarly prices of other vegetables have increased manifold with no administration in the state
