Ranji Trophy matches in Udhampur from January 2007

Ranji Trophy matches would be organized in Sports
Stadium, Udhampur from January 2007 in which cricket players of National repute are expected to
participate. The tournament is being organized by Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association in
collaboration with District Sports Advisory Board (DSAB), Udhampur.
The information was given at a meeting of District Sports Advisory Committee held under
the chairmanship of District Development Commissioner, Udhampur, Mr. O. P. Kalandria here today.
The Senior Superintendent of Police, Udhampur, Mr. P. R. Manhas, Chief Planning Officer,
Mr. Z.A. Bandey, Assistant Director, STC, Udhampur, S. Bhupinder Singh, District Youth Services and
Sports Officer (Secretary DSAB), Mr. Ashok Kumar and members of the DSAB including Mr. Sham
Swaroop Kalsotra, Mr. Raj Guru, Mr. Shiv Kumar Sharma and Mr. Ashwani Khajuira besides officers
of both Degree Colleges were present in the meeting,
The tournament would be a rare sports event in Udhampur town wherein five one-day
cricket matches would be played. For the purpose, detailed discussions were held on various issues
regarding the successful conduct of the event.
The District Development Commissioner who is also the chairman of DSAB agreed to
sanction Rs.50,000 for development of the sports stadium including installation of flood lights and
leveling of the ground. He said that adequate lighting in the stadium would also facilitate the morning and
evening walkers of the town.
Regarding the issue of collection of 50 per cent games fund from private educational
institutions of the district, the Chairman categorically instructed the Chief Education Officer to issue a
circular for depositing the amount well in time to Sports Department.
It was also decided that inter-district Kho- Kho and inter-colleges sports competitions
would also be organized in the district in near future. The DDC also asked officers of PWD for
up-gradation and improvement of indoor sports stadium, Udhampur on priority basis.
The Assistant Director, Sports Training Centre, Udhampur, S. Bhupinder Singh, also
highlighted the demands pertaining to training centre, which include construction of boundary wall and
scarcity of drinking water etc. Mr. Kalandria assured that efforts would be initiated for early solution of
the problems.
The other issues which came up for discussion included shifting of HT line from the ground
of sports training centre, Udhampur, proper drainage of sports stadium, inclusion of wrestling matches in
sports activities.
