| Barzullah Gurdwara: Life line for thousands of flood hit families | | GPC accommodates 10000 families, treats 18000, distributes relief worth billions | | Srinagar, Oct 3: Unlike many organizations active in Kashmir which claim to be saviors of humanity when it comes to politicizing, Gurudwara Shaheed Bunga of Barzullah Srinagar is proving life line for tens of thousands of flood hit families irrespective of the faith they profess. Details received from the office bearers of Gurudwara Prabandak Committee (GPC) Barzullah reveal that 'from September 6 onwards till September 8 morning, around 10000 flood hit families of different districts of Kashmir reached in Gurudwara premises. The Gurdwara had only 2 quintals of rice and few kilograms of pulses in the store. "After September 7 markets were closed, I along with my other members of GPC reached Rangreth area and started collecting rice and pulses from people who were safe. We collected donations from people and at the same time I somehow managed to contact GPC Delhi who responded immediately and sent us 60 quintals of food items etc by air route, " said Gurjeet Singh, President GPC Barzullah According to another office bearer, Surinder Singh Chani 'in around 50 big halls and in dozens of tents which GPC members erected in the lawns of Gurudwara, around 10000 people of different religions could be accommodated and served every time. "just like people from all religions are living here together, similarly people from all religions helped us, we received Rs 10000 from Kupwara Trade Union, one Muslim guy settled in Hyderabad donated 24000, Relief Trucks worth cores of rupees reached here from Ajmeer, Punjab,Chandigarh, Delhi and aid from USA also reached here which we are distributing among needy on daily basis," said Chani GPC also runs a Health centre which comprises 8 doctors including one Gynecologist, Kripual Kour ,besides Dr M.S Shant, J.B Singh, Bikram Singh, Jitinder Singh and a dozen staff members serve flood affected people in the Gurudwara premises. Details received from medical camp reveal that till date around 18000 people were treated, among them most of the patients treated were from majority community. As per an approximate estimate medicines worth Rs 20 lakh excluding insulin injections worth Rs 5 lakh prescribed by doctors were given to flood affected people. It does not stop here, GPC volunteer body also conducted a rescue operation in flood affected areas and rescued around 1500 people, more importantly GPC rescuers fished out 14 dead bodies from House number 354 of Jawaher Nnagar which collapsed, 2 from Mahjoor Nagar and 1body from Suthrashahi area. Pertinently when water has completely receded in Kashmir excluding Rajbagh and Jawahar Nagar areas of Srinagar, around 2000 families are still camped in Gurudwara Barzullah who are fed two times a day, besides thousands of people from diverse religions on daily bases can be seen in long queues waiting to get relief material from the office bearers of GPC Shaheed Bunga Barzuallh. |
