| Anjuman welcomes verdict of Supreme Court on Urdu | | | | Jammu, Oct 3: Anjuman Farogh-e-Urdu Jammu and Kashmir, in its weekly literary meeting has welcomed the historic verdict of Supreme Court (SC) which withheld the amendment in the Utter Pradesh Language Act of 1951 in 1989 by the Utter Pradesh government that entitled the Urdu to be the second official language of the state. According to press release, The said amendment was challenged by the U.P. Hindi Sahitya Smalen in various courts and ultimately it landed in the Apex court of the country that gave its verdict which is a matter of pleasure for the Urdu fraternity particularly of UP that had remained main centre of Urdu till partition of the country. Anjuman felt that giving Urdu status of second official language would perhaps be not sufficient as it would not contribute in the development and propagation of the language unless at the school levels at least up to middle classes it is not taught and made compulsory. Anjuman further wished that all other states where Urdu speaking population is in considerable strength Urdu in the first instant made it as second official language and undertake necessary steps to teach it in the schools & colleges. |
