| Centre releases Rs.29 cr to J&K under DPAP | | | JAMMU, May 11 Under the Centrally sponsored scheme of Drought Prone Area Program (DPAP), an amount of Rs.28.85 crore has been released by the Centre to Jammu and Kashmir State since 1995-96 till 31st January, last. The scheme is under implementation in 22 blocks of Udhampur and Doda districts covering an area of about 14,705 sq. kms. During the last fiscal, an amount of Rs.2.60 crore was released to the State till 31st January, 2007. At present 972 blocks of 185 districts in 16 States are being covered under the Program. Until March 1999, the program allocation was being shared on 50:50 basis between the Centre and the State Governments. However, with effect from April 1999, the allocation is shared on 75:25 basis between the Centre and the State Governments in respect of new projects sanctioned during and after 1999-2000. Under DPAP, 24,363 Watershed Development Projects, covering an area of 106.77 lakh hectares with a total cost of about Rs.2, 095.50 crore, were sanctioned up to 31st March, 2006 while during the last financial year, 3,076 new projects were sanctioned till 31st January, 2007. The basic objective of the program is to minimize the adverse effects of drought on the production of crops and livestock and productivity of land, water and human resources, thereby ultimately leading to the drought proofing of the affected areas. The program aims at promoting the overall economic development and improving the socio-economic condition of the disadvantaged sections inhabiting in these areas.
