Lax security in winter capital raises many eyebrows
5/11/2007 11:56:23 PM

Jammu, May 11
Within days after shifting of Durbar move offices from State’s winter capital here to Srinagar, jawans of security forces and state police force have, apparently, lowered their guard and are becoming complacent when it comes to performing their routine vigil, patrol duties in and around vital installations and crowded market places in Jammu.
Lax security for past one week at several city land mark junctions have even surprised local residents as they find less attentive jawans dozing off while on duty manning civil secretariat building, police headquarter, district police lines, strategic nakas and religious places.
Surprisingly when reporters visited Jammu airport, few religious places, and surveyed vital installations including Fly over, BC Road, Bus stand, Sabzi Mandi, every where they found jawans were relaxing under the blazing heat of sun.
At certain places, absence of covered area forced them to huddle in a small corner to enjoy the cool shade for some time at the expense of their duty.
At Jammu airport the reporters faced no problem in gaining access to the main portico even when they had not proved their identity at the main entrance. Only verbal exchange at the main entrance was treated sufficient information to allow the reporters inside the airport.
The situation was no different at several religious places including Bahu Fort temple, Hanuman Mandir at Har Ki Paudi, Panjbhaktar Mandir, where devotees were not frisked carefully allowing majority of them to enter the premises with mobile camera phones inside the premises.
A senior citizen Kewal Kishore said, "Besides, trimming down strength of Para-military forces at several important nakas and absence of security forces across various other strategic points during peak hours, absence of regular naka patrol during evening hours in city periphery is all visible even to a naked eye. Referring to several key localities like Sidhra by pass, Narwal, Channi Himmat, Sainik Colony, Trikuta Nagar, Shastri Nagar, Nanak Nagar, Gandhi Nagar, Talab Tillo, New Plot, Janipur, Subash Nagar, Paloura, he said lesser jawans on patrol duty were visible during late hours raising many eyebrows among city residents
