| Persian course concludes at KU | | Sinha for forging linguistic links with Iran | |
SRINAGAR, MAY 12 Governor Lt. Gen (Retd) S K Sinha today called for forging linguistic linkage with Iran and expressed happiness over the proposed tie up between Hamdan University, Iran and University of Kashmir. In his valedictory address at the conclusion of 21-Day Refresher Course in spoken Persian at Gandhi Bhavan of KU this morning, the Governor said that at a time when India and Iran are at the threshold of forging economic links through oil pipe, it would be a step forward to revive the old links between these two countries. ‘We must revive the old links in the modern world, which is becoming a global village’, the Governor added. General Sinha referred to commonalities between India and Iran and said that there has been a lot of interaction between the two Nations during ancient and medieval periods. The two civilizations and their two languages –Persian and Sanskrit- dominated this region of world as Greek and Latin flowered in the West. While Sanskrit like Latin faded away as spoken language, Persian and Greek continued to flourish, he said, adding that those non-conversant with Persian can feel the music of this language. He said Persian played a very important role as official language during the medieval period in Mughal era and had a unifying effect. About the proposed MoU between Kashmir University and Hamdan University, the Governor recalled the contribution of Shah Hamdan in introducing Sufi Islam and various handicrafts in Kashmir. He stressed the need for updating Persian text books taught in schools in the State bringing them at par with the curriculum in Iran. ‘The Persian discipline at post graduate level will go a long way in reviving the old linkages apart from opening up job opportunities for the scholars’, he observed. General Sinha dwelt on his personal admiration fro Persian, saying that one of the elders in his family had traveled to Iran to attain proficiency in the language. ‘Though I am not conversant with Persian yet being a student of history, I was highly impressed by the great civilization’, The Governor complimented the organizers for holding such an event, being attended by 83 participants from all over the Valley. He hoped that students and teachers will attain proficiency in the language and make a high mark in the field. He said that he responded quickly to the proposal for holding of such a course in KU when Chairman, Public Service Commission briefed him about it after his visit to Iran. Mr Pandit delivered the Presidential Address while Vice Chancellor, Prof Abdul Wahid Querishi presented welcome address. Prof M S Niazmand, Programme Co-ordinator and Head, PG Department of Persian gave a resume of the first ever event in the University while Dr Ulfat Jan and Mr Gazenfar Ali, representing teachers and students gave their observations on the course. They received certificates on behalf of the participants from the Governor. Dr Abdul Hamid Ziayee, Director, Iranian Culture House, Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Delhi and Prof. Qamar Ghaffar, Programme Co-ordinator and HOD Persian Jamia Milia Islamic University also spoke on the occasion. Director School Education, Kashmir, Mr Mohammed Rafi presented vote of thanks. Besides faculty, staff and students, Member Public Service Commission, Mr M Manzoor and Registrar, KU, Dr Mehraj-ud-Din were also present. The dignitaries were given mementos on the occasion. Later, the Governor visited the auditorium in the campus which is at the final stage of completion. The Registrar briefed him about the progress on the project. The course was organized by Iranian Culture House, Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, New Delhi in collaboration with PG Department of Persian, University of Kashmir, Directorate of School Education, Kashmir and Department of Persian, Jamia Millia Islamia University, Delhi.
