| Tune up education to suit global demand: Azad | | | Jammu, May 13 – Underlining the importance of keeping pace with present globalization, liberalization and fierce competition in the field of education, Chief Minister Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad has lauded Jammu University for functioning in tune with present day educational requirements. Addressing 12th Convocation of University of Jammu here today, Azad, who is also pro-chancellor of the University, said that Jammu University has distinction of being the country’s first University to attain ISO 9001: 2000 certification. He said University has become a nodal centre for dissemination of information, experiences and new developments in the field of quality assurance adding that it provides all round assistance to 123 affiliated colleges and has identified and maintained quality benchmarks in its key-performance areas. The University, he said, has taken a number of initiatives by starting new academic programs in Post-graduation and research in the disciplines of Microbiology, Fisheries, Bio-chemistry, Law, Women Studies, Physiotherapy, Computer Sciences, Engineering, etc. with market linkages and aim at increasing employability of the students. New Campuses have been set up in Bhaderwah, Kathua and Udhampur with sub-centres at Reasi, Doda, Patnitop, Ramnagar, Poonch to increase the out-reach of the University, he added. Departments and centers have been added over the past few years in the form of Centre for Women Studies, Centre for Ambedkar Studies, Gandhian Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies, Academic Staff College, Nehru Studies Centre, Disaster Management Centre, Entrepreneur Development Cell, Centre for Hospitality and Tourism Management, Azad said. “While Jammu University is keeping pace with the modern education and technologies at the same time due care is being taken to educate and teach students about our legends, and it is in this context that two prestigious chairs in the name of Maharaja Gulab Singh and Gen. Zorawar Singh have been established in the discipline of history and centre for strategic and regional studies respectively”, CM said. The University, he maintained, has been continuously up-dating and up-scaling its activities and functioning to adjust to the new developments in the civil society which are dynamic and ever changing. In this connection, he said initiatives taken in Information and Communication Technology, Networking with optical fiber through V-SAT, Internet connections in all the teaching departments, central internet facility, counseling and communication, computerization of the examination wing, etc are worth mentioning. He said University is fortunate to have Governor Lt. Gen. (Retd) S. K. Sinha, as its Chancellor, who is a man of great ability and experience. He said Vice Chancellor Professor Amitabh Mattoo has been the driving force behind giving Jammu University national and international exposure.
