Governor hails development, growth of JU

JAMMU, MAY 13
Governor Lt. Gen. (Retd) S. K. Sinha, who is also Chancellor of Jammu University, speaking at the 12th convocation of the university here today, said that the institution has made many strides and appreciated the support extended by Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and initiatives taken by Vice Chancellor Prof. Amitabh Mattoo to make it as a centre of excellence.
General Sinha said that he had many opportunities to visit the university and interact with faculty and students. Congratulating the awardees of degrees and winners of medals and certificates, he said that they have a great responsibility to march ahead with confidence and guide and shape the destiny of the country to new heights of progress and prosperity and wished them all success in it.
Recalling his student days when he had received the degree at a convocation about 60 years back, Governor said that it is a great day in the life of those who receive the degrees. He also expressed his happiness that there were large number of girls who received degrees and awards at today’s convocation.
He said that Jammu and Kashmir is known all over for its unity and harmony.
The Governor referring to six mantras which chief guest at the convocation Dr. Karan Singh placed before the youth and suggested the students to follow this advisory.
President Indian Council for Cultural Relations and MP Dr. Karan Singh in his convocation address said that Jammu University has developed impressively and it is emerging as one of the premier universities of the country. He also appreciated the measures taken for opening university campuses at various places in Jammu division and said that this would provide facilities of higher education to the youth of far-flung areas nearer to their homes.
Appreciating the newly constructed General Zorawar Singh Auditorium in the university, Dr. Singh described it as the best and state-of-the-art facility in the country.
He said that human personality is multi-faceted and taking due cognizance of this multiple dimension, the education has to strive for developing it in a holistic manner. He put six points before the youth for the purpose. He said physical fitness needs to be given due focus and suggested for a mass awareness campaign in this regard. He said the second important factor is that education has to develop intellectual capabilities of youth as knowledge pool is increasing day-by-day since learning is a life long process. He said that information, knowledge and wisdom should be the basic things in learning.
Dwelling on other aspects of his suggestions to youth, Dr. Singh said that developing emotional maturity is important for holistic personality development along with physical and intellectual aspects. He said we have a rich and unique composite cultural heritage while laying emphasis on developing sense of appreciation for aesthetic beauty. He also stressed for teamwork and social responsibility pleading for need to absorb socially desirable values. He said one need to develop spiritually as well.
Calling upon youth to develop leadership qualities, Dr. Karan Singh said that the younger generation has a great role in building the society.
He also greeted Jammu University for its excellent performance in various fields and congratulated the awardees of today’s convocation.
Chief Minister Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad, who is also Pro-Chancellor of the university, also addressed the convocation
