| JU’s 12th convocation held, record number of degrees conferred | | Karan Singh demands renaming of JU after Maharaja Gulab Singh | |
JAMMU | MAY 13 Dr Karan Singh, Member of Parliament and Chancellor of erstwhile J&K University today sprung a surprise by demanding renaming Jammu University after the name of Maharaja Gulab Singh, the founder and architect of J&K after 38 years of its formation during his convocation address on the occasion of 12th convocation ceremony of University of Jammu held at General Zorawar Singh Auditorium here today. Dr Karan Singh surprised the gathering by putting forth the demand for renaming JU after the name of Maharaja Gulab Singh University on the pattern of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST) to honour the great son of the soil. The credit of consolidating the northern frontiers of India goes to Maharaja Gulab Singh, he added. He also expressed surprise over the fact that entire debate on J&K has been focused only on the three regions viz Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh ignoring Gilgit and Baltistan regions which are also part of J&K. He also credited Mattoo of bringing JU on the educational map of the India. The University is emerging as a premier University of North India, he added. “I have not come across an auditorium like Zorawar Singh Auditorium even JNU does not have auditorium of such a giant size”, he said while congratulating people of Jammu for having such a magnificent auditorium. He termed the concept of naming the auditorium after the name of great warrior of the state, Gen Zorawar Singh as a good gesture.
