Detention of truck driver leads to road blockade
5/14/2007 12:14:02 AM

SRINAGAR, MAY 13
Hundreds of people today took to the streets in Jammu and Kashmir's Tangmarg area, blocking the Srinagar-Gulmarg road for nearly an hour, to protest the detention of a truck driver who was later freed after questioning by security forces, officials said.

Mohammad Ayub Lone was picked up by security forces for suspected links with militants from his village Deer in Tangmarg, 45 km from here, sparking protest by locals who claimed he was not associated with any militant organisation and demanded his release.

The protesters dispersed peacefully after senior police officials reached the scene and assured them of looking into the matter.

Lone was freed by the security forces after questioning.
