| AWES grooming next generation | | | Jammu May-14 In consonance with the ethos, “Education is empowerment and the greatest form of welfare”, and Army Welfare Education Society (AWES) was conceived to meet the basic requirement of providing quality education to the wards of Army personnel who suffer tremendously due to frequent movement. A humble beginning has, over the last two decades, metamorphosed into a vibrant society that caters for education from the primary to post- graduate levels. Today, a soldier’s child can, through the medium of the society, initiate the education process with kindergarten and culminate with a degree that would open avenues to top of the line employment in a variety of fields. The scope of the society is expanding at a fast pace to embrace all possible fields of learning and skills. AWES are running 123 schools with over 1.5 lakh students and twelve professional colleges. Nearly 7000 children are added every year to the schools. In the process, the society is producing an invaluable intellectual capital and skilled work force dedicated to the development of the nation. The society is well on its way towards becoming a premier institution of its type at the national level. A new era has ushered in wherein new buildings for schools are being constructed in 31 stations under the major works project (MWP) with a financial outlay of about Rs 213 crores. A minimum of nine schools with modern and state-of-the-art infrastructure are planned to be constructed every year through MWP in a manner that will ensure completion of the project within the next ten years. As the infrastructure is being upgraded with utmost vigour, staying abreast with modem teaching methods and practices is the hall mark of the AWES policy.
