| All Parties meet held in cordial atmosphere’ | | Press carried distorted versions to mislead people: Tarigmai, Yaseen | | Jammu May-14 Sharply reacting to the reports appearing in a section of press about the outcome of the All Parties meeting, convened by the Chief Minister at Srinagar two days back, State Secretary and MLA M Y Tarigami and Chairman PDF Hakim Mohammed Yaseen, have made it clear that the views put forth by them in the meeting have been reported out of context conveying a sense, contrary to their import and meaning. It appears that a section of the press, ostensibly, misinformed by certain vested interests, have chosen to project a distorted version of the proceedings to mislead the public opinion. Addressing a joint press conference at Srinagar today these leaders have said that ‘there seems to be a deliberate attempt to mislead the public opinion, motivated by narrow partisan interests’, adding that ‘despite differences on various issues, which are bound in a state like Jammu Kashmir, the meeting was held in a cordial atmosphere and sincere efforts were made to appreciate each others view point. ‘Of course, there was ‘‘unanimity on certain issues’’, resulting into the constitution of two committees over the issue of normal delimitation, redrawing of boundaries and rotation of reserved constituencies’, they maintained. On the issue of 25 per cent increase in the Legislative Assembly seats, these leaders clarified that different regions of the state compete for larger shares, citing real or perceived sense of deprivation. However, ‘their stand was forthright as they took position that the plea of real or perceived sense of discrimination with Jammu region must be seen against the background of human tragedies in the Valley’ and drew the attention of the Commission towards apparent anomaly in the figures indicating converse relation in population and electorates of the two regions of the state. Regarding the problem of 1947, 1965 and 1971 refugees, Tarigami and Yaseen maintained that the ‘Government was bound to address their grievances to enable them to live a life of dignity with opportunities to advance their social and economic interests without compromising the unique position enjoyed by the State regarding Permanent Residents (PRC)’. On the question of delimitation of Assembly segments, these leaders said that despite differences, they told the meeting that efforts would have to be made to identify the areas of agreement till a consensus emerges adding that efforts can be made to rationalize the composition of Assembly segments and remove the existing anomalies to serve the interests of common people in their lives. ‘There was no legal or constitutional impediment in relation to the reserved constituencies’, these leaders are said to have told the meeting. ‘Maintaining that Kashmir has reached such a stage where each one of us will have to rise above narrow partisan consideration’, these leaders observed and said that the main purpose of holding the press conference was to set the record straight by placing the true facts before the press and the people.
