| Khaleda Zia's top aide arrested | | |
DHAKA, MAY 14 A key aide to former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia was arrested today, two days after he claimed that she was still under pressure to leave the country.
Brigadier (Retd) Hannan Shah, a senior leader of Zia's Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and her adviser, was arrested from his residence here, officials said.
"He was first taken to Cantonment Police Station for a brief period and then was brought to suburban Gazipur to appear before a court," a police official said without any elaboration.
Until recently Shah maintained a low profile in the BNP politics but hit newspaper headlines after he criticised fellow party stalwarts for not standing firmly beside Zia following installation of the military-backed interim government in emergency-ruled Bangladesh.
He told reporters on Saturday that Zia was still under pressure to leave the country despite government's denial of attempting to force her into exile.
"She (Zia) did not get the Saudi Arabian visa and she did not want to go too (but) there is still some pressure on her to leave for any other country," he had said while claiming that Zia herself conveyed this message to him over phone.
Authorities have reportedly restricted Zia's movement outside her Dhaka Cantonment residence though the interim non-party administration denied it earlier.
