| Centre announces Rs 741 cr package for flood-hit states | | |
New Delhi, Aug 08: The Union Home Ministry today announced a Rs 741 crore relief package for the flood-affected states in the country. Meanwhile, there was no let up in the flood situation in Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra due to torrential rains.
The announcement was made after an inter-ministerial meeting that was held to review the flood situation in various parts of the country. Home Secretary V K Duggal presided over the meeting.
According to the package announced, Andhra Pradesh will receive Rs 271 crores, Gujarat has been allocated Rs 194 crore and Maharashtra will get Rs 176 crores to aid the relief work.
The meeting came a day after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh spoke to the Chief Ministers of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Orissa regarding the precarious situation in the states.
Singh has offered the Centre`s help in relief efforts even as Army has swong into action in Surat rescue operations.
Meanwhile, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil will undertake a tour of the flood-hit areas and assess the situation first-hand.
