NABARD sanctions 3256 works for J&K: Zargar
992 crore incurred on various projects

Srinagar May 15
Minister for Agriculture and Cooperatives, Mr. Abdul Aziz Zargar underlined the need to utilize NABARD funds judiciously so that maximum results are obtained on ground.
He was presiding over an officers meeting of NABARD, Agriculture Horticulture and Cooperatives departments here today. Among others Principal Secretary Agriculture Production, Mr. S. S. Sahani, Registrar Cooperative, Mr. G. N. Qasba, Deputy General Manager, NABARD, Sh. Ashok Mathur were present.
The meeting discussed threadbare the projects under Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) of NABARD. It was informed that NABARD has sanctioned 3256 works for J&K at an estimated cost of Rs.1565.53 crore, out of which State has utilized 992.79 crore up to ending March,2007. The meeting was also informed that on the completion of these projects 50,000 hectors of land would get irrigation facilities, besides benefiting 9 lakh souls. The meeting discussed the packing and grading facilities available to the orchardists and introduction of farmer friendly insurance schemes in the state.
The Minister said that NABARD is playing a vital role in building the infrastructure, particular in agriculture sector. He said apart from agriculture, the need of the hour is to develop horticulture, vegetables, saffron and floriculture sectors in the state, which can improve the socio–economic condition of the farmer community. He underlined the need introducing horticulture insurance scheme to pave the way for getting relief to farmers in case of any natural catastrophe.
Mr. Zargar said that agro processing has a vast potential and people should come forward and set up units in areas having geographical advantages of the land. He said so far few agro based industries have been set up in private sector, but need of the hour is to establish more such ventures which can improve the economy of the state and on other hand create employment avenues for unemployed youth. The minister said that the introduction of Technology Mission envisages increased in quality production of fruit in the state.
Regarding sericulture sector, the Minister said that it has also a vast potential and a large population is dependent on it. He said that farmers should be made aware of the benefits of cocoon rearing to induce them towards this sector.
The Minister asked the officers to revive JAKFEED and desired that financial institutions should also come forward and help to revive and make it viable.
