| Inquisite Mumtaz makes it to APS | | | Jammu May-15 Mumtaz, a teenaged boy of the Gujjar community, from one of the terrorist affected village in Surankot Tehsil, a regular watcher of the Army’s anti terrorist operations in his village and the surrounding areas, has won the hearts of minds what led to his schooling in a reputed Army Public School in Punjab. Unlike most of the others of his age, he chooses to see and observe rather than sea and shrug the anti terrorist activities going on in the border area of Surankot in Poonch district. Mumtaz, was always inquisite of the equipment the Army columns carried.’How do two radio sets talk to each other’? ‘How do the bullet jacket works’? ‘Where are you from, how big is your village and how does a multi grenade launcher works?’. What really perked up in the interest of an Army Officer was Mumtaz’s querries about the Solar Lights distributed during a Sadbhavana Project. ‘How does it work? Can bigger solar panels provide electricity for the while village? Will radio and TVs work by this? Getting extremely excited over the querries by a teenaged boy, that too from a far off and remote area, the Army one day visited Mumtaz’s school. It turned out that his teachers considered him to be an extremely bright student, who was quick on the uptake and had consistently scored good marks. However, his teachers feared that his parent’s poverty may force him to discontinue his further studies. Further options were explored and the Commanding Officer was requested to interact with Mumtaz and the former was highly impressed and took up his case with the top Army Officers and managed his schooling APS Beas, one of the Army Public Schools in Punjab, where he got admission in class VI. Though the road ahead is neither easy nor will be short of challenges, but at least, Mumtaz has a chance to see the outside world to learn to achieve and finally deliver to the society, to the village and the nation as a whole.
