| Div Com reviews traffic scenario | | Directs for installing timetable boards at bus stands | | JAMMU, MAY 16 Divisional Commissioner Jammu Mr. Pramod Jain reviewed the traffic scenario in entire Jammu province in a meeting of senior officers convened here this morning. Interacting with the officers, the Divisional Commissioner enquired about the traffic regulation, number of passenger vehicles plying on different routes, system of issuing licences and route permits, regular checking of vehicles and other related issues pertaining to each district of Jammu region. SSP National Highway, Mr. Dhanish Rana apprised that due to regular checking of vehicles on National Highway (NH) varied routes, about 268 vehicles were challaned and Rs. 31700 realized as fine whereas 95 vehicles were challaned in Doda district and 268 retrial tests were conducted. In Udhampur district 444 retrial driving tests were conducted, out of which 18 were cancelled. In Poonch district 356 retrial tests were held, of which 149 were declared unsuccessful. During the period, nearly Rs. 1.05 lakh was realized as fine from defaulters. He informed about the widening of roads at five different places to ease traffic congestion. Regional Transport Officer, Jammu Mr. F.C. Bhagat said that as a result of surprise checks and imposing of fine on erring drivers, the rate of accidents has reduced to a large extent. He said joint flying squads have been constituted in Doda district with local police to avoid rash driving and avoid accidents. SSP Traffic Mr. S. Watali said that to ensure smooth and safe flow of traffic, the staff strength has been increased as 11 more Inspectors have been inducted raising the strength to 23. He said constant vigil is maintained to avoid traffic chaos. Dy. SP’s of Rajouri, Poonch and Doda apprised about observing of Safety Week in their districts and educating the transporters and common man of traffic rules. Asserting that the overloading menace should be curbed on all routes, Mr. Jain stressed upon the concerned officers to work out effective strategies for safe traffic regulation. He asked them to prepare timetable charts of passenger vehicles and install these on conspicuous places at different terminals not only for the convenience of commuters moreover to avoid overloading. He asked them to ensure the buses and other passengers vehicles ply as per the timetable. Divisional Commissioner instructed the respective Mobile Magistrates to report the progress registered on every Saturday. He said that progress report should reach his office on 5th of every month to review the implementation of decisions taken in previous meetings and draft future plans for smooth traffic flow. He directed the concerned District Development Commissioners/ District Magistrates to monitor that the timetable is strictly adhered to by the passenger vehicles and stern action to be taken against defaulters. He asked them to issue more route permits particularly for busy routes to cope with overloading menace and ensure safe journey. Organizing of regular awareness campaigns and road safety weeks in all districts was also emphasized. Regarding the sharp and U turns the Superintending Engineer R&B informed that there are about 40 Sharp/U turns in Udhampur and 15 in Reasi districts and of which only 3 have been treated so far. He said SRTC was directed to provide 10 additional buses in Poonch, Rajouri and Doda districts.
