| Landslide disrupts yatra briefly | | | Srinagar, Aug 8: A landslide at Brarimarg near here disrupted briefly the annual pilgrimage to Amarnath which is coming to an end tomorrow even as the holy mace left for Panjtarni this morning.
The landslide struck Brarimarg blocking the shortest Baltal-cave route stranding a number of pilgrims including a fresh batch of 70 persons who had left Nunwan base camp on their way to the 3,880 metre high holy cave today, official sources said.
However, authorities immediately pressed men and machines and managed to restore the track for the pilgrims heading for the cave, the sources said adding the track was completely restored after several hours paving way for those returning to the base camp after having 'darshan' (glimpse) at the cave.
After night halt at Sheshnag, the Charri Mubarak (holy mace) left for Panjtarni, the last halting station enroute to the cave, around 7 am today, the sources said.
Being carried by its custodian Mahant Deepindra Giri, a group of sadhus and devotees were accompanying the holy mace, which is scheduled to reach the cave around 6 am tomorrow, marking the end of the pilgrimage which commenced on June 11.
Meanwhile, 50-year-old woman pilgrim Neelima of Nagpur, who was critically injured after she fell down from a horse at brarimarg yesterday, succumbed to her injuries at soura medical institute last night, the sources said.
With her death, the number of pilgrims who had died, mostly due to natural causes, since the commencement of the yatra has risen to 46. In addition, two Muslim youth who were providing their services to the pilgrims to reach the cave died in separate accidents. |
