Baig, Sagar receive best legislators’ awards

Srinagar, May 16
Stating that democracy thrives on the legislature and media, Chief Minister Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad has highlighted their role in bringing about socio-economic transformation and attitudinal change in the mindset for the larger interest of the people.
Speaking at the award giving ceremony to best legislators and media organizations here this afternoon, Chief Minister said that people repose great faith in their representatives and expect legislators to be the role models. He said unruly behavior or pandemonium, created by legislators in the Houses, sends wrong signals and tell upon the overall image of the most important democratic institution.
Referring to the parliamentary business, Mr. Azad citing examples of Mr. Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Mr. Inderjeet Gupta, said that both the leaders were most vibrant and vocal parliamentarians but their tone and tenor never made the proceedings unpalatable.
He called for creating exemplary and inspiring legislature culture in the state making both the Houses more effective, productive and people friendly. “We have to give a lead to others in this field”.
Chief Minister said that media and legislators are complementary to each other and are inter-dependent. “Politicians and legislators make news and media circulate it to every corner”, he said and added that both have to render their responsibilities respectfully and in true spirit.
Underlining the importance of media in dissemination of information and public awareness, Chief Minister said the positive and objective approach should be the hallmark of journalism. He said unnecessary hype of unconfirmed reports creates confusion which require to be given due consideration while filing reports or telecasting footages. “In a rat race we have to ensure that we do not unwittingly contribute to any negative and unconfirmed tendencies”.
He congratulated the legislators and media organizations who received award.
Best Legislator for the year 2005-06 was given to Dr. Mehboob Baig while as this award for the 2006-07 was bagged by Mr. Ali Mohammad Sagar.
The Appreciation certificates for the year 2005-06 were given to Legislators Mr. Kafil-ur-Rehman, Mrs. Khemlata Wakhloo and Mr. Ashwani Kumar Sharma. The certificates of appreciation for the year 2006-07 were awarded to legislators Mian Altaf Ahmad, Mr.A. R. Veeri and Mr. Balwant Singh Mankotia.
The best media award of Rs. 25,000 for coverage of Jammu legislature session for the year 2005-06 was jointly bagged by JK Channel and Take One while as 2nd award of Rs. 15,000 went jointly to Indian Express and State Times and third award of Rs. 10,000 was bagged by Hindustan Times.
Similarly for Srinagar Session the first award was bagged by Shehrbeen of Radio Kashmir, 2nd by Srinagar Times and Alsafa jointly while as third award went to Daily Uqab.
The Award Committee for recommending best legislators was represented by former Speakers of J&K Legislative Assembly Mr. Ali Mohammad Naik and Chowdhary Mohammad Aslam. Bureau Chief of PTI Jammu Mr. M. K. Bangroo was another member of the Committee. The award committee for media was represented by legislators Mr. M. Y. Tarigami, Mr. Ajay Sadhotra, Peer Mohammad Hussain and Mr. S. W. Narboo.
Speaker Mr. Tara Chand also addressed the gathering and said that award ceremony was introduced in the year 2000 to encourage and recognize the hard and efficient work of legislators who highlight the grievances of their areas in more professional way. He congratulated the legislators and media persons for getting the award.
He also appreciated media for highlighting the proceedings of legislature.
Dy. Speaker Mr. Mohammad Akbar Lone also addressed the gathering.
Among others, Chairman Legislative Council Mr. P. Namgial, Minister for Health and Medical Education Mr. Mangat Ram Sharma, Minister for Social Welfare Haji Nisar Ali, Minister of State for Finance Mr. Prem Sagar Aziz, Minister of State for Youth Services and Sports Mr. Babu Singh, leader of Opposition Mr. A. R. Rather, several MLAs, Chief Secretary Mr. C. Phunsog and senior officers of Civil and Police administration were present on the occasion.
