| Power crisis will affect growth: PM | | | Wednesday, May 16,2007 NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday directed the Power Ministry to ensure that the UPA Government’s target to provide electricity to all villages by 2009 should not be missed at any cost. There should be “no excuses” for failing to meet this commitment, he said.
At a special meeting of the Energy Coordination Committee on Tuesday, Singh said the country would fail to achieve the growth target of 10 per cent for the Eleventh Plan if the “grim” power situation continued, and if the state and the Centre failed to meet their plans for capacity addition. Today’s meeting is a precursor to the Chief Minister’s meet on the Power Sector to be held on May 28.
Based on the achievements of the Tenth Plan, where both the Centre and states failed to meet their targets to add 41,000 MW and could achieve only 50 per cent of what was planned, Singh asked the ministries concerned for the action plan that would ensure that the Eleventh Plan targets are actually met. For the Eleventh Plan, the Government is expected to add over 71,000 MW of capacity.
The Prime Minister expressed his concern on how targets of all segments—thermal or hydro—were missed. He singled out nuclear power and demanded an answer as to why existing nuclear power plants were operating at only 60 per cent plant load factor. While the issue for low PLF is shortage of fuel, the Prime Minister, however, did not give any directions on how to tide over the problem.
