| Nehru's constituency lost on Cong. map | | | SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT NEW DELHI, AUG. 8: If Phulpur in Uttar Pradesh (UP) elected India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, today's Congress high command finds it necessary to accord greater attention to the parliamentary constituencies of Sonia Gandhi and her son, Rahul Gandhi. The Congress party has launched its 'Quit Mulayam' campaign in UP. But Nehru's constituency (Phulpur) is now lost on the Congress map. And it matters little in any political equation. Nehru won the polls hands down from Phulpur in 1957and 1962. Some visitors to the Phulpur village have found that the face of Congress there is wrinkled, old and quivering. A frail frame emerging from the ruins of a glorious past now lost. And when this face hiding memories of a lost legacy looks back tears speak louder than words.
If age and a wrinkled face are that which define a true Congressman then 90-year-old Vaidy Harishankar Dubey would easily qualify for one. Six decades back, Dubey was a young man helping out Nehru with his election campaigns. Sharing his makeshift poll office and lining up to hear his addresses from the Gomti College grounds. But, now this man has stories, which nobody is willing to hear. According to Dubey, Nehru used to visit Phulpur three times for every election campaign. He used to address rallies from the Gomti grounds. That was magic. "Now no one comes. No senior leader has ever visited this place. It feels bad," Dubey lamented.
The place from where Jawaharlal Nehru ran his election office is in ruins. Now, only old timers gather in Phulpur villaget for an idle afternoon chat! ===================== |
