Rahul is Congress party's 'man for the future'
BJP for comunal polarisation, says Sonia Gandhi
5/16/2007 11:45:33 PM

BL KAK
NEW DELHI, May 16
Congress supremo, Sonia Gandhi, has cautioned her partymen against the Bhartiya Janata Party's "single-point programme" of instigating communal polarisation in the country. Challenge for the Congress, she said, was to perform in Goa and confront the BJP.
Speaking at a meeting of the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) here, termed Congress’s washout in UP "very disappointing" and asked partymen to gear up for the upcoming Assembly polls in Gujarat and Goa. "We mounted a spirited campaign throughout which we witnessed a great deal of goodwill and support towards our party. But organisationally we were not able to transform that goodwill into votes", Sonia said.
The Congress chief added: "We now face a stupendous challenge, a challenge that we accept and that we will meet with hard work and determination". Sonia insisted that the party did reasonably well in 2004 Lok Sabha polls. "This gives us both hope and confidence that the people Gujarat which gave birth to the Father of the Nation will vote for strengthening Gujarat's traditions of secularism and social harmony", she concluded.
Congress may have been washed out in Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, but the party’s top brass is not willing to take responsibility. Rahul Gandhi may not be aceptable to one and all in his party. But the Congress leaders loyal to Sonia Gandhi have described Rahul as Congress party's 'man for the future'.
Rahul Gandhi declared in New Delhi that he would go back to UP and continue his work there. "Basically what happened is that we do not have an organisation there and we have to build that. It is a process that we are going to work at", Rahul told reporters. He insisted that the Congress will carry on with its "fight" in UP and will get back.
He congratulated Bahujan Samaj Party chief, Mayawati, for her "stunning performance" in the UP polls. Rahul was speaking after a Congress Parliamentary Party attended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and other senior ministers to take stock of the poll debacle.
