Cellular phone guns enter J&K
India-Pakistan quarrel unlikely to end soon
8/8/2006 6:45:53 PM
B L KAK
NEW DELHI, AUG. 8: In a swift turn of events, Pakistan has, following its serious diplomatic row with India, put on alert its troops and paramilitary Rangers close to the frontier with India. Last 40 hours have witnessed a flurry of activity in Pakistani defence formations across the Line of Control (LoC) and International Border (IB) in Jammu and Kashmir, according to intelligence reports.
According to these reports, the mood of the average Pak soldier across the Jammu and Kashmir frontier has suddenly changed--from peaceful to aggressive. These reports have also made a reference to the "sudden" movement of military personnel and vehicles in Skardu region across Kargil for the past one week or so.
Quite significantly, amid the noises of Pakistan's ability to deal with the 'enemy', India has come under attack for its alleged terrorist activities against Pakistan. Islamabad has alleged that the Indian consulate at Zahedan in Iran is involved in terrorist activities against Pakistan. And Islamabad is reported to have conveyed to Tehran its concern over the consulate's activities. Pakistan has also been accusing India of using its embassy in Kabul and consulates in four Afghan cities for "anti-Pakistan activities".
At a time when Pakistan 'patriots' in Kashmir seem desperate to keep the anti-India pot boiling, Indian security agencies do not rule out the possibility of the use of cellular phone guns against soft targets in the troubled State. The clandestine flow into several areas of Jammu and Kashmir of cell phone guns in recent times has led government sleuths to detect and neutralise modules possessing the "fancy lethal items".
The Military Intelligence (MI) and Intelligence Bureau (IB) are understood to have informed their respective Ministries in New Delhi that there is no dearth of terrorists in J&K, who are trained in making use of mobile phones to trigger IED (improvised explosive device) blasts through remote control. It is already known that a mobile phone can be fitted with an explosive, which can be made to cause the blast by just making a call to the phone.
Officials admit that it is not easy to diferentiate a cellular telephone from a cell phone pistol. With some modification, some keys on the pad can be used as triggers for firing 0.22 calibre shots.
In Jammu and Kashmir, quite a few senior politicians and bureaucrats are on the hit-list of terrorists. Some intelligence sleuths do not rule out the possibility of some Islamist rebels making use of cell phone pistols to do away with the lives of prominent mainstream politicians and legislators in the troubled State.
Yet another disadvantage for the security set-up in Jammu and Kashmir as well as in other places of the country flowing from the mobile telephones with cameras. These, according to a set of evidence with the Ministries of Home and Defence, can be used for spying by taking photographs of sensitive civil and military installations.
