| After nearly two-decades, daredevil stunt returns to Valley | | | SRINAGAR, MAY 17 After nearly two decades, a daredevil stunt known as the "well of death" was staged in the city, attracting a large crowd, especially youngsters who had heard about it from their elders.
Delhi-based stuntman Ram Prasad Azad Ganga set himself ablaze before diving sixty feet below into a well that had also been set alight at the Kashmir Haat in the heart of the city last night.
The 55-year-old performer was loudly cheered by the audience, especially youngsters who had turned up in good numbers to watch the event, which was last staged before militancy erupted in Jammu and Kashmir in 1989.
Many of them had climbed the roofs of nearby buildings to see the spectacle.
Ganga, who had last performed at the Haat in 1985, said he was happy to perform in the city again.
"I am glad to perform in the valley again. We had wanted to peform the stunt here for past several years but could not," he said.
The spectators were left awestruck at the act and appreciated the "bravery" of the stuntman.
"I am seeing it for the first time ... It is fantastic," said Irfan, who had heard about the stunt from his elders.
"It is dangerous and demands lot of courage," said Farooq, another spectator.
For the elders, the show was a reminder of their youth.
"The show reminded me of my youth when I and my friends used to visit the exhibition ground just to watch it," said 45-year-old Nazir Ahmad Bhat, a resident of nearby Batmaloo locality. |
